Each week, I carve time out of my hectic schedule of school, work and family to glue myself to the couch and absorb all the garbage being thrown at me from the television. And yes, I realize the shows are scripted. Do the producers really expect us to believe the Kardashians work out all their family problems by the end of each hour-long episode? Or what about the raunchy show “Love and Hip Hop Atlanta”? No way would Kirk have the audacity to play his wife like that on national television. Are you aware that hate is a learned behavior? Oh yes, my friends, learned. By everyone it seems – family, friends, peers, acquaintances. No one is safe. Hate can breed like a gaggle of KKK rabbits. It knows no boundaries in terms of race, ethnicity, sex, age, economics, social status or common sense. Let me tell you about one of my early lessons in racial understanding. Walker takes job in Nebraska

Thomas Walker has spun his last record at Forest Park. The vice president of student affairs has accepted a position as president of Central Community College’s Grand Island campus in Grand Island, Nebraska. “This is probably the toughest decision I had to make in my professional life,” said Walker, 53. “One of my personal goals was to be a college president, but it had to be in the right place. I think (Central) is a great fit.” […]

Theodis Brown Sr. was sworn in as Subdistrict 1 representative on the St. Louis Community College Board of Trustees at the board’s April 24 meeting. Brown is also the chief of Castlepoint Fire Protection Association. He defeated Redditt Hudson, regional field organizer for Region IV of the NAACP. The election was held April 8, and the certified vote was 13,318 for Brown and 11,786 for Hudson. Brown will serve a six-year term. […]

Harrison Center reaches out to North City community

St. Louis Community College is reaching out to help a struggling community restore its image by moving Forest Park’s Human Services Department to the William J. Harrison Education Center in north St. Louis, near Grand Boulevard and Cass Avenue. Students and staff pulled together on April 26 at the Harrison Center for the first annual “Inner City Change — Community Passport to Success,” showcasing the Human Services Department and other community service groups.
