College swears in new board member

Theodis Brown Sr. was sworn in as Subdistrict 1 representative on the St. Louis Community College Board of Trustees at the board’s April 24 meeting.

Brown is also the chief of Castlepoint Fire Protection Association. He defeated Redditt Hudson, regional field organizer for Region IV of the NAACP. The election was held April 8, and the certified vote was 13,318 for Brown and 11,786 for Hudson. Brown will serve a six-year term.

Cafeteria hours shortened for summer

Treat America’s summer service is limited to grill items and a small selection of grab-and-go items.

Starting Tuesday, May 6, and continuing through Friday, July 25, the Forest Park cafeteria will be open from 8 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. It will be closed on Memorial Day and Fourth of July.

The cafeteria will return to regular hours on Aug. 18.

STLCC and WGU Missouri sign tuition agreements

St. Louis Community College and Western Governors University Missouri announced Tuesday the signing of an articulation agreement that allows STLCC graduates and staff to apply for free to WGU Missouri and, if admitted, receive discounted tuition at the nonprofit online university. Radiologic tech students finish third in state

Second-year radiologic technology students Steve Martin, Megan Ryan and Victoria Smith won third place in the Missouri Society of Radiologic Technologists Student Bowl recently in Columbia, competing against 13 other state programs.

Spring pottery sale to be held this week

The Forest Park Clay Club will display the handiwork of student artists from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Wednesday, May 5-7, on the cafeteria stage as part of the bi-annual Spring Pottery Sale. Prices vary. The event is open to the public.

College honors Tom Rogers, Randy Malta

Tom Rogers, who started as a part-time employee in the Copy Center while attending Forest Park, has been named Staff Member of the Year. He has worked at the Forest Park campus full time for 37 years.

Rogers’ supervisor, Roger Mayden, nominated him for the award.

“He is an integral part of the campus in order for it to function properly,” Mayden said. “He goes above and beyond every single day. He’s irreplaceable.”

Randy Malta, Blackboard guru and part of the Instructional Resources team in the Forest Park Library, was runner-up for Staff Member of the Year. He received a certificate.

Malta’s official title has been Senior Instructional Designer since November 2009. He started at Forest Park in June 1998 as manager of Media Services, and then served as district manager of the Tele-Learning program, based at the Cosand Center, for three years. He moved to Meramec for a year and a half as a digital manager before returning to Forest Park.

Yezbick to sign copies of art book

Dan Yezbick, associate professor of English at Forest Park, will sign books from 6 to 7 p.m. Monday, May 12, at Subterranean Books in University City.

In addition to signing his oversized, 320-page art book, “Perfect Nonsense: the Chaotic Comics and Goofy Games of George Carlson,” he will take questions from the audience.

The book is loaded with wonder and wit, capturing the best of Carlson’s unique spirit of happiness and fun, with illustrations, archival photos and reproductions of rare originals.

Yezbick spent more than 10 years doing the research. The book was published by Fantagraphics Books on March 4.

Bolden wins Bowling for Scholars trophy

Eddie Bolden, adjunct faculty member in engineering graphics, received the highest-scoring bowler trophy at the annual Bowling for Scholars fundraiser.

The April 11 event raised more than $37,000, with proceeds going to scholarships to help students purchase textbooks and course materials.

People can taste wedding cakes

This semester’s Baking and Pastry Arts students will display their final-exam wedding cakes on Thursday, May 8.

The daytime class’s cakes will be displayed from 8:45 to 9:30 a.m. in the Student Center cafeteria. After the cakes are graded, the students will cut them and serve pieces to family, friends and the general public at 9:30 a.m.

SLATE to sponsor public job fair

SLATE, the St. Louis Agency on Training and Employment, will hold a job fair for anyone interested in employment opportunities at R.J. Corman Railroad Group. The fair will be held from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. May 7 at SLATE, 1520 Market St.
