CULTURE GEEK: Diehard ‘Star Wars’ fans are losing the faith

July 26, 2019

A year ago, if you had told me that the majority of “Star Wars” fans were not going to be excited about Episode 9, I wouldn’t have believed you. The hype for “The Last Jedi” (Episode 8, released in 2017) was infectious, and the idea of seeing Luke Skywalker on screen once again was enough to get fans and non-fans into cinemas. The film earned more than $1.3 billion at the box office, making it a definite success for Disney. Or so it seemed. Hate for the film spread fast on social media and elsewhere on the internet. […]

WEIGHING IN: ‘Dark Phoenix’

July 26, 2019

I went to the mall a few weeks ago to watch “X-Men: Dark Phoenix,” which is a reimagining of the Dark Phoenix storyline from other “X-Men” comic books and movies. It was dedicated to the late Stan Lee, creator of Marvel characters ranging Spider-Man to The Hulk, Captain Marvel and Iron Man. The most interesting part of the movie was when the Jean Grey character became the phoenix. The X-Men were in space rescuing astronauts whose space shuttle had been wrecked by a solar flare. […]

CULTURE GEEK: Inevitable death of cinemas in the streaming age

July 12, 2019

Theaters have played a huge role in America’s favorite pastime since the late 19th century. Watching a highly anticipated feature with a theater full of equally excited fans is something everyone should be able to experience. It’s been more than 100 years since the invention of film, and movie-making is as big as it’s ever been. So why is it nobody is going to the movies anymore? Some 84 percent of American respondents admitted to watching more movies at home than in theaters, […]

UNCENSORED: Do a little stargazing at McDonnell Planetarium

July 12, 2019

St. Louis has a ton of neat attractions, so I decided to become a St. Louis tourist this summer. First on my agenda was a visit to the large, hyperboloid structure along Interstate 64 in Forest Park. What in the world am I talking about, you ask? The James S. McDonnell Planetarium, which is part of the St. Louis Science Center and walking distance from campus. Whenever I drive or jog by the planetarium, I am in absolute awe of the architectural design, and the experience changes at night, when spotlights cast different colors on it. […]

FIRED UP: ‘The Avengers’ epic finale is heartbreaking

May 10, 2019

“Avengers: Endgame,” the epic finale of “The Avengers” franchise, is finally here. I’ve been waiting for this moment since the release of the first Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) movie, “Iron Man,” in 2008. “Iron Man” premiered on May 2 of that year. I saw it when I was 10 years old, and I was blown away. […]

UNCENSORED: ‘Protect and serve’ instead of instilling fear

May 10, 2019

It was a beautiful Thursday afternoon. I had just left school, feeling great about a test I took that morning. All the windows in my car were open, except the driver’s window, and I was listening to one of my favorite Desi songs, singing at the top of my lungs, moving one of my hands to the beat while keeping the other one on the steering wheel. My eyes were glued to the road. […]

April 19, 2019

News broke on March 31 that Ermias Joseph Asghedom — a Grammy-nominated recording artist, songwriter, philanthropist, activist and entrepreneur known professionally as “Nipsey Hussle” — was fatally shot outside his Los Angeles store, Marathon Clothing. […]

UNCENSORED: Relationships are work – but worth it

March 29, 2019

The Oxford dictionary gives four definitions of “relationship”: 1. The way in which two or more people or things are connected, or the state of being connected. Example: “The study will assess the relationship between unemployment and political attitudes.” 2. […]

UCENSORED: The nation is traumatized by Trump

March 8, 2019

On Jan. 25, the federal government ended a 35-day partial shutdown, the longest in U.S. history. All because our beloved president didn’t get funding from Congress for his border wall, which for the record, he had promised Mexico would pay for. Throughout negotiations, Trump threatened to declare a national emergency, which would allow him to take funds allocated to other agencies and programs and use them to build a wall. […]

UNCENSORED: Decision fatigue is cramping my style

December 7, 2018

There is one week of classes left before finals, and many deadlines are approaching, yet I have no inspiration or motivation to complete my assignments. The problem? Decision fatigue. It’s a condition that is caused when a person has had so many choices and made so many decisions over a period of time, they’re too tired to continue. […]
