Walker takes job in Nebraska

Thomas Walker has spun his last record at Forest Park. The vice president of student affairs has accepted a position as president of Central Community College’s Grand Island campus in Grand Island, Nebraska. “This is probably the toughest decision I had to make in my professional life,” said Walker, 53. “One of my personal goals was to be a college president, but it had to be in the right place. I think (Central) is a great fit.” […]

Theodis Brown Sr. was sworn in as Subdistrict 1 representative on the St. Louis Community College Board of Trustees at the board’s April 24 meeting. Brown is also the chief of Castlepoint Fire Protection Association. He defeated Redditt Hudson, regional field organizer for Region IV of the NAACP. The election was held April 8, and the certified vote was 13,318 for Brown and 11,786 for Hudson. Brown will serve a six-year term. […]

Harrison Center reaches out to North City community

St. Louis Community College is reaching out to help a struggling community restore its image by moving Forest Park’s Human Services Department to the William J. Harrison Education Center in north St. Louis, near Grand Boulevard and Cass Avenue. Bus dispute impacts Forest Park

The Forest Park campus seemed a little deserted on April 7, leading some to assume students were watching the St. Louis Cardinals’ home opener. Others blamed a “sick-in” by MetroBus drivers, which left many riders waiting at bus stops and MetroLink stations. “I ended up walking home,” said James Cherry, 28, a general transfer student. Cherry knew something was wrong after waiting more than an hour at the MetroLink station at University of Missouri-St. Louis. He called Metro Transit using the emergency call box on the platform. “We’re short on drivers,” the attendant reportedly said. More than 70 bus drivers called in sick that day, 10 times the usual number, according to local TV and radio stations. […]

Money for books rolls in from bowling event

More than $37,000 was raised this year by Bowling for Scholars to help STLCC students buy books and class materials. E-cigs may go up in smoke

As electronic cigarette use continues to grow, colleges are beginning to place the devices under tobacco-free campus rules enacted before the new form of smoking took off. At St. Louis Community College, students may soon see a ruling on e-cigarette use. The college-wide Institutional Affairs Council and the four Campus Academic Councils have proposed to the Board of Trustees that the district’s tobacco-free policy be amended to include electronic cigarettes, prohibiting their use on all campuses.
