College approves first adjunct contract

St. Louis Community College Board of Trustees voted to approve the first-ever adjunct union contract on April 26. A 3 percent pay raise will be retroactive to Jan. 1, 2018. The contract will expire on June 30, 2020. Beyond pay, adjuncts will have more job security and access to a 403(b) tax-sheltered annuity. They also will see changes in the course-assignment process and handling of personnel files and student complaints. “Before, we had nothing,” said adjunct art professor Brett Williams. “Now we have a contract.” Williams is a member of the bargaining committee of the Service Employees International Union, which represents adjuncts. Provost leaves abruptly

Larry Johnson is gone. Forest Park’s provost moved out of his office and left campus for good Friday, despite stating earlier this month that he would be staying until his contract ended June 30. “He did some good work,” said Franklyn Taylor, dean of student development and enrollment, on Wednesday. “I had no idea (he was leaving Friday), and I didn’t ask any questions.” […]

Ex-adjunct still banned in new city post

Former math adjunct Steve Taylor is still banned from St. Louis Community College’s four campuses because of a run-in with STLCC officials at a board meeting last fall.  That’s causing a problem for Wildwood City Council, which holds some of its meetings on STLCC’s Wildwood campus. Taylor was elected as alderman for the city’s 4th Ward earlier this month. “They’re still not allowing me on campus, even though I am an elected official,” he said. Wildwood City Administrator Ryan Thomas called the ban “unfortunate.” Officials are looking for alternative sites. […]

Forest Park students weigh in on gun control

Many Forest Park students, faculty and staff want stricter gun control in light of the recent Florida school shooting, according a random survey conducted by The Scene on campus. Education major Lynette Farmer, 35, doesn’t think people with mental illness should be allowed to own firearms.“I’m not saying guns don’t protect people,” she said. “But you’re getting guns in the hands of the wrong people who don’t have the mind frame to know what to do with it. I’m just sick of kids getting killed.” […]
