The newest club on the Forest Park campus requires students to “get into character.” The Dungeons and Dragons Club, also known as the DnD Club, revolves around the table-top storytelling and role-playing game by the same name.

Players come up with their own characters to complete quests in make-believe worlds created for them by “dungeon masters.”

“I (did) this before, and it was really fun,” said President Finn Zimmerman, 19, an automotive technology major.

“I thought it would be a great idea to make one here, at the Forest Park location, since we do not have a club like this, where people can just have fun and express themselves.”

Zimmerman formed the DnD Club on Feb. 22 with Victor Freeman, 21, a general transfer studies major who serves as vice president. Both are staff members for The Scene student newspaper.

The club already has 18 members. They meet from 2 to 4 p.m. Thursdays in SC-118, a Student Center conference room next to the Highlander Lounge.

“I’ve been playing Dungeons and Dragons on and off for like five years,” said member Daniel Scott, 26, an applied science major.

“I hadn’t been able to play in a long time and I really wanted to. I think it’s been great. It’s a good group. It’s been really fun.”

Meetings start with players gathering around two large tables and listening to dungeon masters describe their quests and imaginary worlds. The sounds of laughter and rolling dice fill the air.

Snacks and character papers are scattered across the tables. Players bond through their interest in the game and love for creative role-playing.

The DnD Club is open to students of all experience levels, including total beginners, according to Zimmerman.

“It could be a social thing to help members with their social skills, an open-minded place to meet different people and express yourself,” he said.

He added that the tabletop and digital collectible card game Magic: The Gathering “is picking up a lot of hype, and DnD is very similar to that. This club is for anyone.”

Aside from meeting once a week, the club has its own online community on Discord.
