The Scene student newspaper at St. Louis Community College at Forest Park won 23 awards in this year’s Missouri College Media Association journalism contest.
That includes first place in the Sweepstakes category, which tallies total number of awards and assigns more weight to higher-level awards. The Scene placed third in the Best Overall Newspaper category.
“I’m very proud of our staff,” said faculty adviser Teri Maddox. “They work hard to serve the Forest Park campus and keep its students and employees informed.”
The annual MCMA conference was supposed to be held April 4 at Southeast Missouri State University in Cape Girardeau, but it was cancelled due to the coronavirus pandemic.
Award winners were announced April 7 in a live-streamed video on the MCMA Facebook page. The Scene competes against other community college newspapers in Division 4.
“News of these awards was bittersweet,” Maddox said. “Four of them were won by our former editor, Tim Bold, who died in February at age 49. He’s still helping us be the best we can be.”
