Wilson is passionate about chemistry
Joe Wilson’s trademark line is “no excuses,” a term plastered around his office and repeated in his syllabus. The Forest Park chemistry associate professor was born legally blind, but that didn’t keep him from earning a doctorate degree, becoming an admired teacher and winning a college Innovation of the Year Award in 2014. […]
Students named to All-Missouri team
Sherell Adams stands at only 4-foot-11 and weighs less than 100 pounds, but she makes a big impression. The general transfer student at Forest Park recently was named to the All-Missouri Academic Team, a statewide award recognizing outstanding community college students. […]
Students shiver in Highlander
Almost everyone who walks in the Highlander Lounge has something to say about the temperature. Most students think it’s too cold. “The room is chilly,” said Malcolm Davis, 24, a criminal justice major. “It’s a lot colder in here than it is in the main lobby.” Constance Davis, 26, an early childhood education major, had stronger feelings. “I am freezing,” she said. “Skin clammy and uncomfortable. However, I could have chosen better attire to wear on this particular day.” Constance was wearing a sleeveless dress. […]
Professor defends Charlie Hebdo cartoons
Some people look at a Charlie Hebdo magazine cover and see prejudice, but not English professor Dan Yezbick. “It’s a common mode of satire,” he said. “It is meant to be very ironic. You show people how others appear idiotic because they are so out of touch.” Yezbick,41, gave a talk titled, “What’s So Funny About Racial Profiling? Art, Terror and Identity in the Charlie Hebdo Killings” in Café West at Forest Park last month. […]
Former prostitute helps women get off streets
Katie Rhoades was a 19-year-old stripper in Portland, Ore., when she met a woman who introduced her to a pimp. Three days later, they were on their way to San Francisco. “We were going there for the purpose of prostitution,” said Rhoades, now 34 and living in St. Louis. […]
PERSPECTIVES: Christian club welcomes all cultures
It’s been three years since I joined the Global Faith Community, a multicultural Christian club at Forest Park. Its mission is to encourage students to meet those from other cultures, learn, socialize and explore views on Christianity. I did not have any friends at Forest Park until I met Erica Li, now the club’s faculty sponsor. […]
WHAT’S BUZZIN’: Plenty to do in St. Louis this summer
Summer is upon us! Some of you are going on vacation. Others are coming back to Forest Park for summer semester. Most students will be hanging around the house and working. What do you have planned for your days off? Understandably, most students have tight budgets and can’t afford pricy entertainment, but there’s actually a lot to do around St. Louis that’s free or cheap. […]
