District revamps PR department
A shake-up in the St. Louis Community College Public Information and Marketing department has reduced its staff from 19 to 14 employees, changed job titles and descriptions and replaced some longtime employees with new faces. The main effect on Forest Park is that a new campus marketing and communications coordinator, Brittney Aladegbami, has replaced Susie Edmiston. […]
Outdoor sculpture open to interpretation
Students, faculty and staff walk past the sculpture in front of C Tower every day, but few know much about it. “It looks like a woman with no head,” said general studies student Patrick Burley, 20. “I would name it ‘Headless Woman.’” Amber Harris, a 45-year-old nursing student, has mixed feelings about the sculpture. “To me, it’s a symbol of how men view women,” she said, “No head, just her body. She is missing her best feature: her mind.” […]
State law protects college gun ban
A challenge to the St. Louis Zoo’s gun policy could prove instructive to officials at St. Louis Community College. Last month, Ohio gun activist Jeff Smith threatened to carry a gun in the zoo, which prohibits firearms. But his plan was thwarted by a temporary restraining order. He declined to reveal his next step when contacted by KSDK-TV. […]
Blind student is “off the chain”
Danny Lawrence walked across the concrete deck of the Forest Park pool, climbed down the ladder on the 12-foot end and began to get acclimated for swimming class. “Oooh, the water’s cold today,” he said. […]
GRAB BAG: Tyler Perry is inspirational
My two favorite Tyler Perry movies are “Why Did I Get Married?” and “Why Did I Get Married Too?” The first is a comedic drama, released in 2007. It’s about the difficulty of maintaining a solid relationship in modern times. Four married couples (who also are college students) and another friend go to Colorado for an annual reunion, but the mood shifts when one couple’s infidelity comes to light. The reason I like the movie is that it teaches people about marriage by showing very real-life and honest representations of how some relationships work. […]
GUEST VIEW: Forest Park stereotypes are wrong
Years ago, when I first moved to St. Louis as a teenager, my friends and I would joke that all the interesting places, cool hangouts and fun events seemed to be in St. Louis County. We would hear about something new and exciting going on and – upon inquiring where – get the response “in the county.” It gave the county a certain mystique and glamour. It made me feel like I was missing out on something as a city dweller. My thinking began to change in my late teens and early 20s, especially after I received an unusual compliment. I had been attending Forest Park, St. […]
