MUSINGS: Exercise your freedom of speech
I stepped off the bus, curious and excited to see what would happen on my college campus. It was the first day of classes after the Michael Brown grand jury decision. I typically keep to myself, but I tapped a young woman on the shoulder as we waited to cross the street. “There may be a walk-out today,” I said. “What’s that?” she asked. “People all over the country are walking out of their jobs and classes to support Ferguson,” I explained. Singing graduate helps the homeless
Lushomo Chambwa got plenty of help as a poor African immigrant going to college in St. Louis, and now he’s paying it forward. Last month, he and other members of his a cappella gospel group The Chosen Ones distributed supplies to the homeless in downtown St. Louis. “We do music, but we were like, ‘Can’t we just take this to a whole new level as far as giving back?’” said Chambwa, 26, a chemistry lab assistant […]
College plans for grand jury decision
St. Louisans don’t know what to expect after the Michael Brown grand jury decision is handed down, and Forest Park officials are no exception. But the St. Louis Community College district is preparing for possible reaction on its campuses. “I know the (grand jury decision) is going to elicit a lot of emotion throughout the region,” said Forest Park Interim President Roderick Nunn. “We can only hope the Forest Park community responds with respect, civility and calm.” […]
Club seeks to unite students with disabilities
Forest Park has a new club with purpose and passion. The Disabilities Awareness Club has been formed to educate the public, help students with disabilities and make the campus more convenient and accessible. “There are a lot of college students with disabilities,” said Paige Karius, club president. “And I think we need to bring awareness to all students about that particular group of people.” […]
Veterans club hopes to create resource center
Leaders of the Forest Park Veterans Club returned from a Student Veterans of America leadership summit in Kansas City last month inspired to make a greater impact on campus. “We’re trying to get a resource center for veterans, a place where they can come and get tutoring and information they need about medical and education benefits,” Club President Edward Alexander said. […]
Exhibit ‘reinterprets’ Internet images
Chicago-based painter and photographer Laura Mackin is displaying her latest work in Forest Park’s Gallery of Contemporary Art through Dec. 11. The exhibit “Come Slowly, Eden” features collages of images found on the Internet and “reinterpreted” to make original statements. “It started as a collection of images of mirror reflections,” said Mackin, 33. […]
Volleyball season canceled
The St. Louis Community College volleyball season was canceled this year after head coach Johnna Kinney announced on the first day of the season that she was leaving to take another job. “It’s kind of how life goes,” said Athletic Director Sharon Marquardt. “Sometimes job offers pop up when you least expect. … You can’t blame a person for trying to secure full-time employment, and that option was given to her, and she took it.” […]
Hopes are high for basketball teams
Basketball at St. Louis Community College is off to a promising start for the 2014-15 season. Both the women’s and men’s lineups are loaded with freshman talent poised to make an impact on the court. Both squads had successful 2013-14 seasons but are now adjusting to the new players. The Lady Archers finished 17-8, just two wins short of a third consecutive National Junior College Athletic Association Tournament appearance […]
