SPEAKING OUT: Get the facts on vaccinations

April 7, 2014

I’m no expert on health care. I’m not a doctor, a nurse or a physician’s assistant. My only medical training is a first aid and CPR class or two. Oh, and watching reruns of “House.” For that reason, I don’t hand out health advice, and I wouldn’t want people to listen to it, anyway. I don’t know what I’m talking about. Know who else isn’t a doctor? Jenny McCarthy. Yet, for some reason, people across the country are still listening to her when it comes to vaccinations. McCarthy’s credits include 1993’s “Playboy” Playmate of the Year, the MTV dating show “Singled Out,” the slapstick comedy “BASEketball” and, most recently, “The View.” I don’t think she has enough star power to get invited to the Oscars. LINKED IN: Dog brings out the best in me

April 7, 2014

A good friend is hard to find. But sometimes a good friend finds you. That’s what happened the day before last Thanksgiving, when I got my Jack Russell terrier, “Puppy.” It started with an inhumane act. I was in my back room painting and talking to my girlfriend. I couldn’t help but notice a woman behaving strangely in the alley behind the apartment. I continued with my conversation but also kept watching the woman. She had a bulge underneath her robe. She walked quickly to a dumpster and opened the top. A furry white face stuck out from under her arm. […]

Hess headed back to Oklahoma

March 31, 2014

President Cindy Hess is leaving Forest Park. She has accepted the position of associate dean of communications at Tulsa Community College’s Southeast Campus in Tulsa, Okla. Her last day is May 13. “I’m looking to be within an hour of most of my family and being in a role that’s more closely connected to faculty and students,” she said. […]

Rush is on to get health insurance

March 31, 2014

Today is the deadline for Americans to sign up for health insurance, so some students are opting out of coverage while others scramble to find options. Fire Protection Technologies student Andrew Wheeler, 24, hasn’t had health insurance for three years. But he’s adamant about not using the federal health-care exchange website because of its problematic launch in October. “It’s either health care through the military, or I just won’t have health care,” he said. Byron Keaton, 21, a theater major and member of the Campus Life Task Force, also has been uninsured for three years. […]

Metro to increase transit fares

March 31, 2014

Metro Transit plans to increase fares this summer, affecting many Forest Park students who commute by bus or light-rail train. Culinary arts major Myeisha Garrett, 19, isn’t happy about it. She uses the system to travel from Dellwood to the college every day and sometimes to her job at Walmart. Metro officials have developed three possible options to raise revenue, targeting people who use public transportation most. […]

Student’s band releases album, sets national tour

March 31, 2014

Garrett Weakley is ready to make an impact on the local music scene. In only his second year playing drums, the 19-year-old Forest Park communications student and his band, Discrepancies, have been promoting their single, “Get Hype,” on campus and around St. Louis. They’re also drumming up excitement for their upcoming EP and Eastern U.S. tour. […]

Coffee house sells ‘rebellious’ muffin

March 31, 2014

Early birds get their morning Joe and jumpstart their weekdays at Comet Coffee, a coffee house down the street from St. Louis Community College at Forest Park. Some people continue the ritual on weekends, when an unusual muffin called “The Rebel Within” appears on the menu. Slice it open to find the golden, runny yolk of a soft-boiled egg in the middle.
