Nude models secure in their own skin

July 1, 2013

Imagine sitting on a stage completely naked. The room is quiet as an art instructor tells students how to sketch you – fat rolls, wrinkles and all. Sound scary? This is part of a regular day for nude models, who bare it all in Forest Park art classes. “I’ve never been nervous,” said Bert Haier, 72, of Webster Groves, a retired hairdresser who has been modeling for 35 years. “I have always been comfortable with my body.” […]

EDITOR’S DESK: Weather reports are depressing

July 1, 2013

As warmer weather came around, so did natural disasters. In the past few weeks, flooding and tornadoes have left many people without homes. I watch the news, and I feel like changing the channel when it’s time for weather reports. Oklahoma has been hit with back-to-back tornadoes, reminding Missourians of the 2011 Joplin tornado and others that have hit our area. The first tornado hit the small town of Moore, Okla. It operated in the same manner as the Joplin tornado, devastating everything in its path. […]

Honor student killed by police

May 6, 2013

Forest Park is mourning the death of a student shot and killed by St. Louis police, who had started chasing him on foot near the Edward Jones Dome after he crashed his vehicle last month. Cary Ball Jr., 25, was a human services major trying to turn his life around after 5½ years in prison. He had a 3.86 grade-point average. He made the Dean’s List last fall. He had just returned from a school-sponsored trip to Jefferson City with Phi Theta Kappa honor society. […]

Forest Park reacts to Meramec case

May 6, 2013

Forest Park officials held a safety forum last week in the wake of a scandal on the Meramec campus involving a bathroom assault. Campus police didn’t report the assault to the public, causing a controversy that prompted President George Wasson to resign. At the forum, Forest Park police chief Richard Banahan talked to a packed classroom of faculty, staff and students about the college’s Emergency Response Team. “We train all the time,” he said. “Every classroom has a panic alarm and phone. If it doesn’t, it will.” […]

May 6, 2013

Customers may notice a change while lined up at the salad bar or waiting for burgers in the Forest Park cafeteria. Chef Todd Segneri, 44, has replaced Dominic Gramaglia as manager. “I have a vision to introduce a few new entrees and to promote hot items as well,” he said. “I’m running light on staff, but I will get the job done.” […]

Rally to support minimum wage workers

May 6, 2013

A coalition of organizations will call for an increase in Missouri’s minimum wage at a march, rally and concert on Thursday in the Central West End. “Workers can’t survive off $7.35!” according to a poster promoting the event. It specifically mentioned fast-food restaurant employees. “The focus is to raise awareness about this issue,” said co-organizer Shannon Garth-Rhodes. “It’s time for us to come together and rally on this issue.” […]

New program recognizes “emerging” scholars

May 6, 2013

Forest Park recognized 96 students through its new Emerging Scholars program at an awards banquet last week. Students qualified by taking 12 hours of developmental courses, or transitioning into college-level courses after completing two or more developmental courses. They also maintained grade-point averages of 3.5 or higher. Two of the 96  – Sherida Carter and Ina Griesohn – were named Emerging Scholars of the Year. They each received a $500 scholarship. […]
