Chancellor candidates visit Forest Park
Forest Park hosted a “meet and greet” in Café West last week to allow students, faculty and staff to get acquainted with candidates for St. Louis Community College interim chancellor. The room was filled to capacity. Candidates introduced themselves and answered questions. […]
Pittman was a king in local reggae scene
Friends and family members are mourning the death of a Forest Park student known for leading a popular St. Louis reggae band. Ronald Pittman, 54, was a music major and member of the African American Male Initiative. He died just before the start of fall semester. […]
Enrollment continues decline
Forest Park enrollment has dropped 15 percent from last fall — from 7,994 to 6,815 students — continuing a downward trend that started two years ago. President Cindy Hess believes there are multiple reasons. “We’d like to think the economy is improving and there are more people finding full- and part-time work,” she said. In addition, Hess cites a national drop in college enrollment and retention, and stricter guidelines for financial aid dispersal. […]
College works to regain accreditation
St. Louis Community College invited local funeral directors to Forest Park last month to discuss how to improve Funeral Service Education programs. The college lost accreditation for its associate’s degree program from the American Board of Funeral Service Education last spring. “A couple of things stood out (at the meeting),” said H.L. Kriegshauser, president of Kriegshauser Brothers Funeral Service Inc. […]
Culinary arts students practice on the public
Forest Park students, faculty and staff can eat in a new “restaurant” almost every Wednesday, Thursday and Friday. Culinary arts training includes practice runs for students, who take turns planning and preparing lunches and dinners and serving them to the public. “(In their last semester), all students rotate through every position they may potentially work in a restaurant situation,” said Clarke Griffin, instructor of restaurant operations. EDITOR’S DESK: Summer wasn’t a total waste
Fall is here, and every year about this time, I start to regret the things I didn’t do over the summer. This year, I can’t even fall back on hot temperatures as an excuse. The weather was pretty mild. Nor can I pretend I was bored with what St. Louis had to offer. It’s only my second year in the city, and there’s a lot I haven’t seen or done. I certainly kept busy this summer, after the stressful but awesome rush of marrying my awesome wife in March. I took two classes (getting college algebra out of the way once and for all) and put in 30 hours a week at my retail job. […]
JUST SAYIN’: Profiling just isn’t right
There has to be a law against police stopping you whenever they feel like it, and their only excuse is, “You fit the description.” Whether I’m traveling in a car, riding a bicycle or just walking down the street, I’ve fit the description on more than one occasion. Somehow I resist the temptation to even get upset about racial profiling. If I said what I wanted to say to whomever decides that I fit the description, then one thing would lead to another, and before you know it, I’d be in cuffs. Or the trigger-happy police, who just can’t wait to carry out their own form of swift justice, would be rolling out a stretcher. Why should I be another statistic? […]
