A few weeks ago, The Scene received a book with a letter asking for a review. I knew absolutely nothing about it, but I took on the challenge of reading it, which excited me.

The book, called “God Loves Ugly & Love Makes Beautiful,” was written by Christa Black, a songwriter and violinist who has toured with the Jonas Brothers, Michael W. Smith and Jennifer Knapp.

I assumed it was a self-help book and that it wouldn’t keep my attention. But I was surprised at how well it was written and how much I could actually see myself in Black’s story.

The book explains how she overcame troubles ranging from self-hatred to eating disorders, depression to sexual abuse. It also helps readers see that they are not alone in the world and makes suggestions on how they can help themselves.

At 29, I’m battling some of the demons that Black battled. I’ve taken a lot away from the book and feel like a stronger person as a result.

Each chapter of the book starts with song lyrics or a poem that Black wrote and introduces that chapter perfectly.

Of all the songs, “Black Monday” is the one that gives me the most hope and helps me understand we each control our own happiness. The music is upbeat and the chorus is great, with lyrics such as:

“Black Monday, you can’t get me down — no, no, no,

Black Monday, turn yourself around — whoa, whoa, whoa,

Take away your poisoning, you won’t defeat another week, ‘cause I’ll put up a fight,

No, Black Monday, you won’t get me down this time.”

Almost anyone can relate to what Black has been through in one way or another. I want my 11-year-old daughter to read “God Loves Ugly,” as she is going through big changes in her life.

I recommend this book to any girl who could use a spiritual lift, whether she thinks she is fat, ugly or not built for love. I feel this way a lot, but no one ever should.

Christa Black has come a long way since college, when she hit rock bottom, called home and told her father she didn’t even have what it took to kill herself.

Her songs have been recorded by Smith, Passion Band and American Idol winner Jordan Sparks. She is a blogger and public speaker. You can find more out about her and listen to her music at
