Honor student killed by police

Forest Park is mourning the death of a student shot and killed by St. Louis police, who had started chasing him on foot near the Edward Jones Dome after he crashed his vehicle last month. Cary Ball Jr., 25, was a human services major trying to turn his life around after 5½ years in prison. He had a 3.86 grade-point average. He made the Dean’s List last fall. He had just returned from a school-sponsored trip to Jefferson City with Phi Theta Kappa honor society. […]

Forest Park reacts to Meramec case

Forest Park officials held a safety forum last week in the wake of a scandal on the Meramec campus involving a bathroom assault. Campus police didn’t report the assault to the public, causing a controversy that prompted President George Wasson to resign. At the forum, Forest Park police chief Richard Banahan talked to a packed classroom of faculty, staff and students about the college’s Emergency Response Team. “We train all the time,” he said. “Every classroom has a panic alarm and phone. Chef Segneri takes the cafeteria helm

Customers may notice a change while lined up at the salad bar or waiting for burgers in the Forest Park cafeteria. Chef Todd Segneri, 44, has replaced Dominic Gramaglia as manager. “I have a vision to introduce a few new entrees and to promote hot items as well,” he said. “I’m running light on staff, but I will get the job done.” […]

Rally to support minimum wage workers

A coalition of organizations will call for an increase in Missouri’s minimum wage at a march, rally and concert on Thursday in the Central West End. “Workers can’t survive off $7.35!” according to a poster promoting the event. It specifically mentioned fast-food restaurant employees. “The focus is to raise awareness about this issue,” said co-organizer Shannon Garth-Rhodes. “It’s time for us to come together and rally on this issue.” […]

New program recognizes “emerging” scholars

Forest Park recognized 96 students through its new Emerging Scholars program at an awards banquet last week. Students qualified by taking 12 hours of developmental courses, or transitioning into college-level courses after completing two or more developmental courses. They also maintained grade-point averages of 3.5 or higher. Two of the 96  – Sherida Carter and Ina Griesohn – were named Emerging Scholars of the Year. They each received a $500 scholarship. […]

Archers coach Libby inducted in Hall of Fame

The Missouri Basketball Coaches Association inducted 11 people into its Hall of Fame last month, including St. Louis Community College’s own Kenneth Libby, assistant men’s basketball coach. “I think it’s great,” he said. Libby has coached 43 years at Christian Brothers University, Mehlville High School, Lindbergh High School and St. Louis Community College. His record is 548-405. Why does Libby like about coaching? “It’s not only about seeing (players’) improvements on the court,” he said, “but getting these kids to keep up with their academic goals as well.” […]

Automotive teacher grew up fixing cars

Richard Athens was 15 years old when he bought his first car for $45 in 1973. It was a yellow, green and gray 1956 Chevy. A customer at his father’s service station sold it to him after determining he couldn’t afford the repairs. “It was the first in a long line of cars,” Athens said. “I remember blowing the transmission drag racing on Grand.” Athens, 54, has been teaching in the automotive studies department at Forest Park for 25 years. He recently was promoted to department chair. […]
