Slay disappoints debate audience

March 4, 2013

St. Louis Mayor Francis Slay didn’t make any friends at Forest Park last week. He cancelled his appearance at a mayoral debate on campus, disappointing students, staff and other audience members. “The mayor can’t be in two places at once,” said his campaign manager, Richard Callow, when called a few hours before the event. “There is another forum tonight.” […]

Flo Valley student shot near campus

March 4, 2013

A male student at St. Louis Community College at Florissant Valley was shot near campus on Feb. 20. He is expected to survive. Police aren’t releasing his name, age or any other identifying information. Two men were arrested in connection with the case, including alleged shooter Jeffrey Burnett, 19, of Florissant, and alleged accomplice John Dailey, 20, of Hazelwood. Neither is a Flo Valley student. Kedra Tolson, the college’s coordinator of public information and marketing, emphasized the shooting was an isolated incident. “We are a safe and secure campus,” she said. “We put everyone’s safety first.” Ferguson Police Department is handling the investigation. The victim had arranged to meet the two men for a drug deal, Chief Thomas Jackson said. Shots were fired about 2:05 p.m. in a car near Hudson Road and College Drive. The victim was shot four times in his back and chest, Jackson said. He is hospitalized at DePaul Health Center. […]

Volunteer walkers get dogs out of the kennel

March 4, 2013

Ann Coleman knelt down to comfort Lovey Duvey, an 11-month-old pit bull that was frightened by a passing truck. Minutes later, the excited dog was jumping and eating snow along Macklind Avenue. “This is the immediate gratification,” said Coleman, 54, of St. Louis, a former freelance writer who lives in St. Louis. She is one of 300 volunteer dog walkers at the Humane Society of Missouri, which is next door to St. Louis Community College at Forest Park. More volunteers are needed. […]

What’s up St. Louie

March 4, 2013

I have been able to see two of rock ‘n’ roll’s greatest acts perform live in the past few months. In February, I had the honor of meeting the legendary Chuck Berry, who received the Lifetime Achievement Award from the Arts and Education Council of Greater St. Louis. Growing up listening to different types of music and having family members in bands has enhanced my knowledge of “greats” like Berry. Meeting this man, who is still performing around the world at 86, was truly a dream come true. […]

WAKE-UP CALL: Media stereotypes different minorities

March 4, 2013

For as long as the media has existed, it has portrayed “inferior” groups, such as women and racial minorities, in a negative light. Newscasts, movies, sitcoms and even cartoons paint their pictures with stereotypes, creating fear and intolerance of anyone who is different. Television programs present an abstract view of society, based on the ideologies of the reporters, commentators, writers and directors. This shapes the feelings of viewers toward individuals and groups, especially viewers who are ignorant of other lifestyles. […]

EDITOR’S DESK: Do something outside your comfort zone

March 4, 2013

Have you done something you sucked at today? I thoroughly suggest the endeavor. What’s that? You don’t like doing things unless you’re good at them? You don’t want to look silly? Allow me to explain why you should start acting outside the box: It is through trying new things in life that you become an interesting person. A comedian named Kyle Kinane once made a great point about why people should strive to be weird. If aliens came to Earth and looked down at humanity, what would they see? People mindlessly driving cars, staring at their phones and walking along the road in single file. […]
